Kindergarten is the place where young children usually get their first formal education. It generally serves as a transition to formal schooling from home. The literally meaning of kindergarten is ‘children’s garden’. Kindergarten serves its purposes by developing basic skills through some social interaction and creative play among the children. It is a part of preschool system in most of the countries. In some areas of the countries like Canada, United States and Australia, kindergarten is regarded compulsory to get their first year education. The term ‘kindergarten’ is often used in British English. It is generally referred as nursery or reception. Children usually between the ages of three to seven attend kindergarten that varies on local custom.
There are many useful functions and activities of kindergarten. By attending the kindergarten, the children learn to play, communicate and most importantly to interact with others in proper way. They used to get taught by the teachers who provide them with various materials in learning to read and write. The children also get their first knowledge about language, mathematics, science and computers from these teachers there. Kindergarten usually serves the purpose of training a child properly in making them perfect from all aspects from the very beginning of their life. Kindergarten also provides part time or full time employment among the mothers.
In today’s world, the All-day kindergarten is becoming very much popular among the people in United States. It generally helps in closing the achievement gap. In All-day kindergarten, the children are exposed more than two to three hours per day than they usually remain.
